A comédie-ballet by Molière
Story:
Argan is convinced he is dying. His doctors agree, mostly because he pays them to. Obsessed with remedies and mounting medical bills, he hatches a plan to marry his daughter Angélique to a physician so he can have free healthcare on demand. Angélique, unfortunately, is already in love with someone else. What follows is a comedy of hypochondria and scheming: a conniving second wife with eyes on his estate, a maid in disguise exposing the quacks around him, and a brother desperately trying to talk Argan into seeing what's right in front of him.
Fun Fact
Molière wrote The Imaginary Invalid while he was genuinely ill. He collapsed during its fourth performance, having played Argan himself, and died that evening. A man mocking his own fear of death, on stage, as death approached.
